Test-Driving the Paleo Diet: Day 3 of the Caveman Challenge

I’m still going strong on my Caveman Challenge. The week’s worth of meals I purchased from Pete’s Premade Paleo include 10 meals and five snacks, meaning that for two days a week, I’m on my own. This week, I headed up to visit my parents and decided to take my “off” days then to make things easier.

I treated one day like a cheat day: I ate some thin-crust pizza and drank wine. The next, I had a sashimi salad and a sushi roll. Even on my cheat days, I’m eating less, but I didn’t gain any weight.

That brings me to Day 3 of paleo meals.

Day 3 Revelations

I’m really enjoying the variety of proteins and vegetables I’ve had thus far. This is especially apparent with today’s menu items. Duck, eggplant, sweet potato and zucchini are all things I really enjoy eating but almost never get at the grocery store.

Eating portion-controlled gourmet food in the “safe” setting of home (as opposed to a restaurant or out with friends, where I subconsciously seem to eat more than usual) has proven to be a winning formula. Even after two days of “cheat” meals, at this morning’s weigh-in, I maintained the 3 lbs. I reported losing on Day 2.

Here’s what I ate today:

I’m calling it now: in a few days, I will wake up craving this duck breast entree. It was that good.

Ah, steak, another favorite protein. The tomatillo salsa added a nice sweet tang.

No surprises here: this week, I’ll alternate between this subtly sweet cold soup and the trail mix.
