This isn’t your father’s football league. Once upon a time, the bigger and NFL player was the better one; today’s players, however, are actually putting themselves on restrictive diets.
There’s a growing consensus among players that to maintain a good level of health, they’ll need to get in shape once their careers end, so why not start now?
Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Dan Williams traded fried chicken for baked chicken. New Orleans Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton has given up fast food. It’s not all about health, though. Lofton himself said, “This league is becoming a passing league and the guys will have to be a lot quicker. If I lost the weight I’d be able to move a bit more.”
Cardinals defensive end Vonnie Holliday added, “The game is getting faster. I remember coming into the league and everyone said you had to be 300 pounds to play on the defensive line, Reggie White was 325. When you get to that weight, you think ‘I can play this game and not be 325, to the point that I’m 270 and comfortable.’” Holliday now weighs 270, down from 320 pounds early in his career.
Is this a good thing? Should a healthy weight be maintained in all walks of life, or is nothing sacred anymore in today’s growing movement toward health?
