Dr. J offers his irreverent, slightly irrelevant, but possibly useful opinions on health and fitness. A Florida surgeon and fitness freak with a black belt in karate, he runs 50 miles a week and flies a Cherokee Arrow 200.

As someone who works as a surgeon and gives opinions in the area of health and fitness, I often have to deal with trying to both convince and persuade people to comply. When you think about it, those first two seemingly similar terms are really not the same at all.
We are convinced by evidence or arguments made to the intellect. Being convinced does not equal doing something about a situation. We are persuaded by appeals made to the will, moral sense or emotions. Persuasion often does equal doing something about a situation. We comply when we act in accordance with our conviction following our being convinced and persuaded.
Whereas a physician must convince and persuade the patient to comply with the their instructions — for example, needing certain behaviors, such as taking the appropriate medication on the correct schedule for a successful treatment outcome — as a surgeon, I sometimes have the advantage of being able to directly comply the patient with the operation.
Most of the time, however, as the doctor or opinion-giver, all I really have is the lesser power of convincing to effect those listening to my opinions to take a healthier course in their lives.
I do have a much more powerful ally, however, as my partner in this endeavor, that does seem to have quite the ability to convince and persuade people to comply: the person’s acquiring a life-altering disease!
I would hope that all of us can respond to the convincing arguments and evidence offered to hopefully persuade us by many caring, healthy-lifestyle proponents, before that supreme convincer — a life-altering disease — comes a-calling!

Note from Dr. J:
Jan Graham, a longtime friend of the “Dr. J will see you now” column and CalorieLab, blogs under the name Crabby McSlacker at her delightful site, Cranky Fitness, has just released her latest and greatest ebook, “Cranky Fitness: Exercise Your Ass Off!”In her own words, “This book includes advice on getting fit, some specifics about various activities you might want to pursue, a bit of motivation and inspiration, and a few advanced tweaks and tips. Despite the frequent use of swear words and copious whining, there are actually many practical, no-bullshit, research-backed techniques discussed for getting and staying in shape.”
Crabby McSlacker is one of a kind, and I am sure you will not only reap many health and fitness benefits from this book, but will have one hell of a fun time reading it!
“Cranky Fitness: Exercise Your Ass Off!” can be found on Amazon or on Jan’s site, Cranky Fitness!
