The ancient Incas had a minimal amount of food choices, yet an exuberant amount of energy that they needed each day just to survive. How did they do it? By eating these five superfoods that allowed their bodies the nutrients and vitamins to thrive.

  1. Quinoa: Quinoa is referred to as the “mother of all grains,” and it’s easy to understand why. Not only does it serve as a complete protein, but it’s also packed with vitamins B and C, calcium and iron. What’s great about quinoa is that it’s easy to make and can be substituted for rice or made into a breakfast cereal when boiled with milk.
  2. Kiwicha: Kiwicha, also known by the term amaranth, contains essential minerals such as iron, manganese, magnesium and copper. One of the most exciting health benefits is the possibility that its powerful healing agents may inhibit tumors. It’s similar to quinoa in the sense that it can be substituted for rice or served as a cold salad.
  3. Pichuberry: Pichuberry is a small fruit with such powerful antioxidant agents that it contains 20 times more Vitamin C than that of an orange. It is also thought to help deter cancer and prevent cellular aging. Not bad for such a small fruit. A great meal idea is to make a quinoa breakfast cereal and add pichuberry instead of blueberries.
  4. Sacha Inchi: Sacha Inchi are often called Inca peanuts. They contain an astonishing 36 percent omega-6, iodine and vitamins A and E. Nearly half of this nut is made up of omega-3. To receive its benefits, you can snack on it like any nut or buy it as an oil and incorporate it into recipes.
  5. Purple potatoes: Purple potatoes are not only pretty on the eyes, they’re also pleasing for the mind. They inhibit age-related memory loss and may protect against cancer and heart ailments. Best of all, they taste delicious and can be roasted and paired along with any meal, just as you would with a regular potato.

Who says you can’t eat healthy and keep your taste buds happy? Certainly not the Incas.
