The Daily Mail interviewed six athletes competing for Turkey in the 2012 London Olympics to determine what they eat during their training phase, and while the calorie totals might not surprise you, the ways they choose to fuel their fitness performance might. Read on for the list of athletes and their respective sports.
- Fatih Avan, javelin: 3,500 calories, mostly comprised of protein like meat, cheese, chicken and nuts.
- Bahri Tanrikulu, tae kwon do: 3,000 calories, plus legal ergogenics and multivitamins. “If I did not take these supplements, I would have to eat several kilos of meat, and dozens of pieces of fruit to meet my daily protein and vitamin requirement,” he explains. “If I had to obtain the calories my body needs through natural foods, I would have to spend all my time eating instead of training.”
- Nur Tatar, tae kwon do: 1,500 calories, because she must shed a few pounds to qualify for her weight category in the Olympics.
- Mete Binay, weightlifting: 3,500 calories, largely composed of red meat, sweet desserts and organic food. He also uses permissible ergogenics and vitamins before competition.
- Elif Jale Yesilirmak, wrestling: 3,000 calories, with a strict emphasis on fish instead of red meat. She also drinks over a gallon of water a day.
- Merve Aydin, 800-meter run: 3,000 calories, including lean protein, nuts, bread and dairy.
Are you surprised at any of the Olympic athletes’ diets above? These sound far more feasible than the 12,000 calories Michael Phelps subsisted on while preparing for the Beijing Olympics.
