Well, this probably isn’t an article that parents would want their college-bound kiddos to read: A study conducted by Colgate University concludes that college students who binge drink are happier than those who drink in moderation. No need to adjust your monitor. You read that right.
What is binge drinking? For a female, it is consuming more than four drinks in one session. For a male, it is consuming more than five drinks. When you consider that just one drink containing hard liquor can put you dangerously close to most state’s legal driving limit of .08, you can imagine what four-plus drinks can do.
Before you question the sanity of those involved in putting out the study, it’s important to understand their motivation behind it. Associate professor of sociology Carolyn Hsu and her team hope that by providing this study, “institutional administrators and public health professionals… design and implement programs for students that take into account the full range of reasons that students binge drink.”
It turns out that the reason why students binge drink is to elevate their social status. They see it as a way of bonding with their peers, regardless of the cost to their liver. This is where the study hopes to focus. Limiting the social benefit to binge drinking could be the key to preventing it.
