Did you hear the one about eggs being as bad for your arteries as cigarettes? Well, it’s not a joke. It’s an actual study that took place by a trio of researchers who directed their questions at a group of individuals 50+. They were asked about their cigarette and egg intake, which relied on each of them remembering every last egg they have ever eaten. The results of the study showed there could be a link between potential increases in carotid plaque buildup. You can read more about this far-fetched correlation here.
This got me thinking about other silly studies I’ve seen in the news lately. Here are five of my favorites.
- Buying organic food can make you act like a jerk. That’s right, “Wholesome Foods and Wholesome Morals? Organic Foods Reduce Prosocial Behavior and Harshen Moral Judgments” by Dr. Kendall J. Eskine from Loyola University New Orleans seems to insinuate as much. According to the study, people who shop smart tend to look down on their fast-food-feasting cohorts.
- Meeting for coffee on a first date can be incredibly dangerous. Why? Because an Australian study found that coffee can make you more susceptible to persuasion.
- Okay, we’re not trying to pick on coffee by any means, but this was another one that was just too good not to include. A U.K. study suggests that coffee drinkers are more likely to see dead people. On the bright side, at least you know that you’ll always have company when drinking a good cup of joe.
- There’s little argument that the sound of a classmate smacking his or her gum can be incredibly distracting, but it turns out it can also lead to better test performance. Want to score an A? Save time studying and grab a pack of chewing gum instead.
- If you don’t want to feel hungry, just close your eyes. At the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, research suggested that the mere sight of junk food can get your belly barking.
