The CalorieLab Address, by Dr. J (With Apologies to Abraham Lincoln)

Contributor: “Dr. J” Dr. J offers his irreverent, slightly irrelevant, but possibly useful opinions on health and fitness. A Florida surgeon and fitness freak with a black belt in karate, he runs 50 miles a week and flies a Cherokee Arrow 200.

For scores of years, our fathers brought forth on the lands of this continent wholesome foods to nourish all men, women and children equally.

Now we are engaged in a great food war, testing whether our nation or any other nation, so prosperous, so affluent, can continue to consume distorted foods produced by an unhelpful food industry and long endure. Many have already lost their lives to this disease causing consumption. Though they are now in their final resting place, we must gather together and unite in their memory so that others do not have to join them before their time.

But in the larger sense, we can not merely debate, we can not merely speculate, we can not merely stand idly by while this unhealthy food plague continues to decimate our citizenry. Perhaps the world will little note, nor long remember what is said here, but it can never forget what led to this moment. It is for us, the living, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work of improving our food supply and food industry that those that tried and failed to advance before us. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. We will be opposed by the food industry lobby, and food addiction, and fast food advertising. Therefore, we must here and now, highly resolve that things will be different in the future and that our society and nation will not succumb to our children living shorter lives than their parents, and that there will be new birth of community health and fitness so that our people’s behaviors, by the efforts of the people for the people, shall not lead to our perishing prematurely from the earth.
