Why Running Sharpens Our Wits

Sometimes Sharp Wits Were Our Only Weapons

As evidence that I have too much time on my hands, I was recently wondering about the origin and evolution of human speech, and the question occurred to me, “What was the very first word?”

Human language had to begin with one word, the same way a long journey must begin with a first step. But what was it? I don’t mean the specific mix of vowels and consonants way back then, of course, but I’m sure there’s a word in contemporary English for the first utterance a human being ever made to communicate something to someone else.

It had to be something very basic and very survival-oriented. Given that, my bet for word #1 is some version of: Run. Or, more accurately, Run!! As in For your life. You could be pedantic and claim that the first “word” was actually more of a screech, and its actual meaning was “Danger!” But when the rest of the tribe or group heard it, they didn’t hunker down or retreat into a circle or try to spot the source of the danger, they took to their heels, so I decided to stick with Run.

Then I moved on to other, more relevant and useful things to think about. Until I read a recent post by my colleague Dr. J on the subject of the benefits of being active. Toward the end of his column there was the following paragraph.

“I’ve planned every elective surgery, and realized how to solve almost every problem that I’ve faced, while running. I’ve read about how our brains become more active after 30-45 minutes of continuous aerobic activity. Studies have demonstrated more individual brain hemispheric activity as well as additional cross callosum activity between the two hemispheres. Rather than being right or left brained, we become of one brain!”

Frankly, the good doctor lost me at cross callosum, but he flicked a switch in my memory that brought up my “The first word was Run” woolgathering. Because I’ve had the same experience while running, a kind of mental energy or invigoration that has produced article ideas, essay topics, gag lines and occasionally the breaking of a writer’s block.

The fact that exercise revs up our mental processes is not news: we know that running, either on a jogging path or in a wheel in a lab cage, improves the cognitive functioning and problem-solving skills of humans and animals alike, and we suspect that exercise somehow boosts the production of neurotropic chemicals in the brain that strengthen brain cells and neural connections and generate new neurons.

But that just explains the biology at work here, the mechanism by which exercise boosts brainpower. It doesn’t explain why that mechanism developed. Which is where the “First word” hypothesis comes into play. Today, people run for a variety of reasons, few of them involving danger or urgency. In contrast, when early man was running, it wasn’t for fun or exercise, it was as predator or prey, either chasing something or fleeing something. Either way, it was a matter of survival, which meant that it called for total mental focus and attention.

The very act of running sent a signal to the brain to ramp up, get the neurons firing, have every sense and every brain cell operating at peak power, the better to anticipate, evaluate, react and otherwise assess and respond to a survival situation.

My theory: That biochemical response, which probably developed long before homo sapiens did, is still at work; and running, regardless of why we do it, still kicks that brain-goosing process into gear automatically. As far as our body chemistry is concerned, we are running for our very lives. And in a sense, that’s partly why a lot of us do run. Maybe our bodies understand what’s going on better than we do.

I really want to lose weight?

Lose Weight?

I do not know, do you?

I am a healthy size 14, which apparently makes me the average American woman. I want to be a healthy size 12. I was a size 10 before I had my son, but between my ribs, that he has managed to get on his knees to spread and develop a little baby-the real breasts (Woo-hoo, a real boobs! Where were you when I needed a date to the prom?), I don’t think that’s in the cards. But you never know.

I got to a point in my life where I have learned a lot about personal truths, and one of them is this-skinny just doesn’t seem like the chocolate tastes like. I’m a fan of the Biggest Loser on TV and I love seeing people who change their lives, but I would really like is to see the contestants sit in the doctors and trainers after the competition, and to develop a goal weight, which is suitable for real life calls for a maximum of 2 workouts a week and allows for the occasional pizza. By the end of the season, the contestants are so focused on losing weight, who lives at the gym and eating half the calories of a healthy body functions require. No surprise they put on a little weight immediately after the show and some of them get so depressed about the fact that they are all back, and then some. Competitors who manage to maintain a very lean weight, are the ones who go to professional training, motivational speaking, or, where they are, in practice, paid for the spokesmanship to stay skinny.

If you want to work with the major goals in the media or entertainment, you want to lose weight. The Media is cruel. If you are Kathy Bates does not work in the television and eat cake. Instead, you’ll probably be fine to replace the money and prestige. What do you want?

Do you want that your significant other is a smokin’ hot hardbody? Then the better would be the same, if for no other reason than that the people who seem to spend a lot of time at the gym. If you’re not in there as well, you can see the honey and other hardbodies will be. What do you want?

Ask yourself, is there something you have or do, that you can not only because of the weight. It’s not about whether or not you love yourself. Self esteem is an incredibly complex and the weight-loss industry would like you to think it is almost completely unrelated to your weight. I know that skinny people who feel worthless and fat people who think they are the finest since sliced bread, both equally without objective criteria. The transition to a scale does not change the head noises.

All life is a compromise. I love good food, good wine and relax, and it is going to be brutal, the rest of my time and calories, or it means that I’m going to do a few miles. So I do. My husband does not care about (and when her BMI exceeds mine, he should better not). Blood chemistry is normal. I am fit enough to walk, if I want to run up and down the stairs, and go to the swing dance. I’m not fit to Marathon, but then, I do not want to run a marathon.

If your butt is too big for the airline seat, your weight is probably not what keeps you from traveling. If you are not so large that you have to design fashions Omar Tentmaker Office where tailored suits are standard dress your weight is unlikely to keep you in professional development. And it’s definitely not keep you find love. If you want to walk down the runway, to lose weight. If your knees hurt, when you walk in, to lose weight. If your blood glucose numbers are off, lose weight. But do not know why you want to lose weight and be realistic about how much you want to lose versus How you want to live.

How The Food Industry Influences Food Policy

Hope you're enjoying this holiday season! This week is traditionally my blog-cation and so instead of writing new posts, here is a favourite of mine from back in 2009.
Simple - they're invited to the table and once there they're able to extend their considerable influence and spin on the proceedings (how many public citizens, scientists, doctors or dietitians have teams of PR folks and scientists helping craft their messages?).

I've blogged about this a great deal in the past and commented on how bad an idea it is to bring people with a vested interest in national food policy to the table when trying to develop new national food policies.

Rather than go through all that again I strongly encourage you to spend 6 minutes of your morning watching the following video. It does a great job covering just who it is who attends and gets involved in the consultations surrounding national food policy development.

While this particular video deals with American school lunch programs, rest assured this video could have been filmed at every "public" consultation surrounding Canada's Food Guide and of course the non-public, stakeholder invited consultations as well.

Walmart’s embarrassing bribery case: a reprise and then some

Yesterday’s New York Times contained an enormous—three full pages—investigative report on Walmart’s use of bribes to circumvent zoning restrictions in Mexico.

The article pulls no punches:

The Times’s examination reveals that Wal-Mart de Mexico was not the reluctant victim of a corrupt culture that insisted on bribes as the cost of doing business. Nor did it pay bribes merely to speed up routine approvals. Rather, Wal-Mart de Mexico was an aggressive and creative corrupter, offering large payoffs to get what the law otherwise prohibited. It used bribes to subvert democratic governance — public votes, open debates, transparent procedures. It used bribes to circumvent regulatory safeguards that protect Mexican citizens from unsafe construction. It used bribes to outflank rivals.

This is not the first time the Times has written about Walmart’s bribery in Mexico.  As I wrote at the time,

Wall Street pressures on corporations not only to make profits, but to grow profits every quarter, are the root cause of much food company corruption and corner-cutting.

But this report takes the investigations to another level. It documents how Walmart officials deliberately undermined efforts by the Mexican government to keep the historic area around the Teotihuacán pyramids free of commercial use.

It comes with:

Among other things, Walmart is the world’s largest supermarket chain. Its 10,000 stores in 27 countries sold $443.9 billion worth of goods—more than half from grocery sales—for net earnings of $15.8 billion in 2012.

As the Times’ article makes clear, the company resorted to whatever seemed necessary to get what it wanted.  This particular case may be an anomaly but it  could not have happened without a corporate culture deeply devoted to maintaining sales and profits.

A cautionary tale?

Become a fermentation ninja – without leaving your pajamas

Eating fermented foods is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health. Fermentation increases the beneficial bacteria, vitamins and enzymes present in foods and makes the nutrients they contain more bioavailable. Our ancestors knew this implicitly: almost all traditional cultures that have been studied included fermented foods in their diet.

Fermented foods have powerful healing properties. I’ve written and spoken many times before about the importance of the gut flora, not only to digestive health, but also to the health of every system of the body. Low levels of beneficial bacteria and high levels of pathogenic bacteria in the gut have been linked to everything from depression to acne to diabetes. This means that maintaining healthy gut flora is crucial to promoting optimal health, even if you don’t have any digestive symptoms.

I often hear from patients and readers that want to include more fermented foods in their diet, but they’re unsure of how to get started. Sure, you can buy at least some fermented foods at the grocery store. But that can get expensive quickly (my local Whole Foods charges nearly $10 a jar for raw sauerkraut, which costs us about $1 per jar to make at home), and there are many others such as water and dairy kefir, sauerkraut, kim chi and beet kvaas that many stores don’t carry. What’s more, fermenting at home gives you more control over the final product. This is important when you’re using fermented foods for healing purposes. For example, many people can’t tolerate store-bought yogurt because it still contains about 4.7% lactose. But if you make your own yogurt at home, you can ferment it for longer than the store-bought brands, which increases the amount of beneficial bacteria and eliminates all of the lactose.

Fermentation isn’t brain surgery, but it is both an art and a science, and there’s a learning curve involved (you should have smelled my first batch of sauerkraut). One of the best ways to learn a new craft is from a skilled teacher. Enter Jenny McGruther, creator of one of the best nutrient-dense food blogs on the web, Nourished Kitchen. I’ve been aware of Jenny’s work for some time, and I recently had a chance to meet her at the Weston A. Price conference in Santa Clara. Jenny told me about a new fermentation course she has put together call Learn How to Ferment Anything, and it seemed like a perfect fit for those of you that have asked about how to learn more about fermentation at home. Jenny is a master of fermentation, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to learn it from.

The course features:

  • 13 fermentation workshops
  • 50 instructional videos
  • Easy-to-follow print tutorials
  • Fact-sheets and troubleshooting tips
  • Regular Q&A conference calls
  • Email access to Jenny so you can ask her questions

This is by far the most comprehensive fermentation course I’m aware of. For example, you won’t just learn how to make yogurt, you’ll learn how to make  Greek, Bulgarian and Scandinavian yogurts, raw milk and pasteurized milk yogurts and even coconut yogurt.   You’ll also learn how to make both dairy and water kefir, “tonic” probiotic beverages like beet kvaas, rejuvelac and sweet potato fly, fermented condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and mustard, relishes and salsas, chutneys and vinegars, sauerkrauts and lacto-fermented vegetables, and a lot more.

CLICK HERE to learn more about the course and get started. Jenny is running a holiday special until 12/1. The code BLACKFRIDAY will take 40% of the cost of the course, so don’t wait too long.

Note: I may earn a commission if you use the links in this article to purchase the products I mentioned. I only recommend products I would use myself or that I use with patients in my practice. Your purchase helps support this site and my ongoing research.

This week's Funny Friday video featuring Jimmy Kimmel's crew giving people two identical cups of plain coffee and telling them one's uber-fancy suggests to me that if you do buy one, you're going to love it.

Not because it'll necessarily taste remarkably different, but rather because we as a species aren't all that bright.
