Questions and Answers on Losing Weight Permanently

How can I lose weight fast and permanently? Well I can tell you it will be no easy task. Losing weight is never easy. You have to commit yourself to it. Give your dedication and learn everything you can. Losing weight is a extremely large topic. That’s why it’s a multi-billion dollar industry. However I can give you some information that you can use to start losing weight and start being healthier. Listed below are some of the basic questions that you might ask on weight loss. All of them are straight forward and to the point. Read it, learn it, and then do it!

I never feel like I can lose the weight I want to lose.

That isn’t very uncommon. Many people believe that their weight has a hold on them and won’t let go. This is negative thinking and negative thinking will be your downfall. If you want to lose weight you have to first change the way you think about weight loss. Start getting positive about it and you will start seeing positive results.

I heard I could lose almost 20 pounds if I stop drinking coffee and soda.

You can indeed lose a fair amount of weight if you drop coffee and soda. However I’m not sure about losing over 20 pounds. It would depend on the quantity you drink these beverages and how much you weight. Soda and coffee do play a factor however in losing weight. If you give them both up you will surely lose a lot more weight and you would lose it faster.

Do I really have to drink 8 glasses of water?

Yes, yes you do. In fact, you should be drinking much more than 8 glasses a day. Water is an essential liquid to the human body. It not only helps us digest foods, but helps cleanse our body as well. All throughout the day you are exposed to chemicals and toxins that are in the air and on your body. Water helps clean it all out. The more water you drink the more weight you will lose and the more healthier you will be!

I hate exercising can I get away with losing weight with out doing it?

Absolutely not, you have to exercise. If you are serious about losing your weight you will exercise. You don’t have to go to a gym or build an expensive home gym. You just have to do some basic exercise and create a routine. Once you have a routine that works for you stick with it and keep on doing it. I recommend that you exercise 3 – 4 times a week. This will keep you healthy and have you sweating that fat off in no time.

Losing weight permanently can happen but not overnight. If you are ready to lose weight use the information above. It can only help you.

Taking the "Weight" Out of Pediatric Weight Management

Had a nice chat yesterday with some great folks from Sudbury, including an exercise physiologist/kinesiologist who works in a paediatric weight management program. We were chatting about whether or not I would consider a trench talk that highlighted paediatric obesity topics.

Now I've often been asked about whether or not I see kids, or whether I'd be interested in setting up a program to help.

Here are my two lines in the sand.

1. I'd only ever recommend involving kids directly in treatment if they already suffered with weight responsive conditions (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.), and then only within the context of a program that explicitly excluded weight as a focus of treatment.

2. For kids without weight responsive conditions I'd only want to work with their parents.

I worry about the impact a tertiary or community based medical weight management focus might have on kids' relationships with food, body image and self esteem, and so for the kids with problems, they might benefit from a clinic focusing on improving their specific health problems through lifestyle change and a non-weight centric focus, while for kids who don't have problems - studies to date suggest parent exclusive treatment is just as good or better than treatment that directly involves the children.

Now I know nothing about the program in the graphic up above - and truly it may be a world class program - but how might you feel if you were a kid who needed to go there? Would you feel "new hope"? Or might you feel shame? I'm not saying it's fair, just that society has associated weight with personal failure, and while I disagree with the linkage I don't think my disagreement will change the fact that there are likely kids going to New Hope, where fair or not the name alone gives them cause not for hope, but for despair.

How Will Obesity Affect the Sustainability of the Health Care System?

Yesterday, I presented a brief talk on obesity at the Summit on Sustainable Health and Health Care, organised by the Conference Board of Canada.

While the two-day conference deals with a number of issues relevant to sustainable health, it was my task to discuss some of the implications of the obesity epidemic.

As I pointed out, obesity no doubt presents important challenges for any health care system, especially if we continue to pretend that this is a problem that will simply disappear if we step up preventive measures (e.g. impose higher taxes on junk food, bring back phys-ed classes to schools, etc.). While such measures may or may not help prevent a further advance of the epidemic, they will hardly help solve the problems of the 20,000,000 Canadians, who are already overweight or obese.

In fact, there is no hope for a sustainable system unless we begin accepting the fact that obesity, at least for the foreseeable future, is here to stay and that unless we begin providing treatments for those, whose health is being affected by increased adiposity, in the same manner as we would for any other chronic progressive condition, we can only expect that our spending on obesity related health problems will continue to increase.

Irrespective of any measures that we may or may not be able to implement to prevent obesity, not offering evidence based help to those who already have this condition is simply disrespectful and discriminatory.

Ontario Pediatrician Recommends Taxation Based on BMI

Last Friday I participated in a call-in show on CTV Newsnet regarding the role of government in obesity prevention policy. A well-known Toronto paediatrician – Dr. Mickey Lerner, joined me.

While I knew from my pre-interview discussions with CTV that Dr. Lerner and I didn’t see eye to eye on everything and that Dr. Lerner felt willpower and education are the keys to success, I was beyond dismayed when Dr. Lerner, on National television, stated that he thought that rather than tax sugar-sweetened beverages, that we should tax obesity. He stated that he thought it would be wiser for Canadians to be asked to enter their BMIs on their tax forms and be levied taxes proportional to their weights than to unfairly penalize those who aren't overweight with soda taxes.

I was appalled.

Putting aside the fact that the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is no healthier for skinny folks than fat ones, as I’ve blogged about before, even if obesity were purely an individual’s problem, even if the research that suggests that weight and health are not in fact mutually inclusive or exclusive were wrong, even if over the course of the past 50 years we’ve truly suffered an epidemic loss of willpower and that we’re lazily and gluttonously choosing not to try, even then medicine is not about blame.

And that’s what made my blood boil.

So just for kicks I decided to spend a few minutes of my time today compiling a list of other folks we could target with higher taxes.
  • Folks who don’t complete their course of antibiotics and require further MD or hospital visits.
  • Folks who stop their antidepressants too soon and crash, go on disability and require regular MD followups.
  • People who never bother going to MDs who later require any number of procedures or hospitalizations as a consequence of waiting too long to address a treatable condition (like the non-compliant diabetic who receives a triple bypass and 6 years of dialysis).
  • Anyone who’s non-compliant with their medications for a chronic condition (like the teen with asthma who requires multiple ICU stays because they don’t bother with their puffers)
  • Athletes who don’t respect their injuries and end up damaging something bad enough to require surgery
And then of course there’s the new lifestyle section
  • Folks who don’t exercise the minimum 150 recommended minutes a week
  • Folks who consume more than 1,500mg sodium a day
  • Folks who don’t consume 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day
  • Folks who consume trans-fats
  • Folks who have desk jobs and don’t take the time to ensure they get up to minimize their sedentary behavior based risks
Heck, if we decide that taxation should be determined on the basis of how well we look after our medical conditions and live our lives we could kiss our deficit goodbye in a hurry because I'd bet there's barely a person alive who consistently follows through with completely clean and healthy living.

Taxing products that are themselves unhealthy to consume is no doubt the responsibility of any government. But taxing people with excess weight because in theory they might have gained their weight eating those products? That's just hateful or misinformed stereotyping of a condition that has dozens if not hundreds of causes and it ignores the fact that scales are absolutely terrible tools to measure health. I know skinny folks who live incredibly self-destructive and unhealthy lives that cost the tax payers huge sums of money, and folks who are fat who live healtheir lives than me and cost the system nothing.

During the call-in show there were many callers who agreed with Dr. Lerner, and while they might not be expected to know any better, the same can’t be said about the good doctor.

Three Tips to Lose Weight Quickly

You may be wondering if there is a way for you to lose weight really fast while making sure that your health does not suffer. The answer would actually depend on what you mean by the term ‘quick weight loss’ because if you are looking for a method that will allow you to lose ten pounds in one week while staying healthy then you will be disappointed. There is, however, a way for you to shed a pound or two every week and keep those pounds off for the long term while ensuring that your health does not suffer in any way.

One very effective way to do this is by making sure that you get enough rest and sleep. While you may think that sleeping is too sedentary to aid in weight loss, it is actually essential because it helps make your body function more smoothly. As a result, your metabolism is able to work at optimum levels and your body’s calorie-burning processes become more efficient when you get enough sleep.

It is also necessary for you to stay away from starvation diets. While these diets may indeed make you lose a lot of weight in a very short period of time, it may also be robbing your of essential vitamins and nutrients that your body needs in order to function properly. Furthermore, most of the weight that you lose through crash diets consists of water and muscle rather than fat. Muscles rev up your metabolism and force your body to burn more calories, which makes it doubly important to build more muscle rather than lose it.

Finally, you need to understand and work with your body’s limitations rather than against it. Punishing yourself with severely intense workouts is counter-productive because it impairs your body’s ability to function as it should, and when your calorie-burning processes fail to function properly, your potential for weight loss will be significantly reduced and you may end up gaining all the weight back.

Is USDA changing its sugar consumption estimates? Why?

If I weren’t so concerned about USDA’s dropping its data on calories in the food supply (see previous post), I might not have become so alarmed about the New York Times report on the sudden drop in esimates of sugar consumption.

USDA provides data on amounts reported as consumed, from 1970 to 2011.

These have declined, not necessarily because people are eating less but because USDA changed its methods.

According to the Times account:

In e-mails the center obtained through a Freedom of Information request, officials at sugar industry trade groups discussed the benefits of the lower estimate and how they might persuade the U.S.D.A. to make a change that would reduce it even more.

“We perceive it to be in our interest to see as low a per-capita sweetener consumption estimate as possible,” Jack Roney, director of economics and policy analysis at the American Sugar Alliance, wrote in an e-mail on March 30, 2011.

These figures are for reported intake—always an underestimate.

Reported intake is much lower than amounts of sugars available for consumption—amounts produced, less exports, plus imports—always an overestimate (the truth lies somewhere in between).

Food availability figures also indicate declines, but suggest that Americans have access to about 65 pounds a year each of table sugar and corn syrup for more than 130 pounds per year total.

None of these figures is precise.  But if the methods for calculation are the same every year, trends should be discernible.

Adjusting for waste introduces new sources of error and makes trends impossible to determine.

The USDA used to re-correct the entire food availability series when making changes in methods.  Why aren’t its data collectors doing that now?

We neeed USDA to be keeping up with food availability data.  What to do?

The Nitrate and Nitrite Myth: Another Reason not to Fear Bacon

Beyond just being loaded with “artery-clogging saturated fat” and sodium, bacon has been long considered unhealthy due to the use of nitrates and nitrites in the curing process. Many conventional doctors, and well-meaning friends and relatives, will say you’re basically asking for a heart attack or cancer by eating the food many Paleo enthusiasts lovingly refer to as “meat candy”.

The belief that nitrates and nitrates cause serious health problems has been entrenched in popular consciousness and media. Watch this video clip to see Steven Colbert explain how the coming bacon shortage will prolong our lives thanks to reduced nitrates in our diets.

In fact, the study that originally connected nitrates with cancer risk and caused the scare in the first place has since been discredited after being subjected to a peer review. There have been major reviews of the scientific literature that found no link between nitrates or nitrites and human cancers, or even evidence to suggest that they may be carcinogenic. Further, recent research suggests that nitrates and nitrites may not only be harmless, they may be beneficial, especially for immunity and heart health. Confused yet? Let’s explore this issue further.

Bacon: the new health food? Tweet This

It may surprise you to learn that the vast majority of nitrate/nitrite exposure comes not from food, but from endogenous sources within the body. (1) In fact, nitrites are produced by your own body in greater amounts than can be obtained from food, and salivary nitrite accounts for 70-90% of our total nitrite exposure. In other words, your spit contains far more nitrites than anything you could ever eat.

When it comes to food, vegetables are the primary source of nitrites. On average, about 93% of nitrites we get from food come from vegetables. It may shock you to learn that one serving of arugula, two servings of butter lettuce, and four servings of celery or beets all have more nitrite than 467 hot dogs. (2) And your own saliva has more nitrites than all of them! So before you eliminate cured meats from your diet, you might want to address your celery intake. And try not to swallow so frequently.

All humor aside, there’s no reason to fear nitrites in your food, or saliva. Recent evidence suggests that nitrites are beneficial for immune and cardiovascular function; they are being studied as a potential treatment for hypertension, heart attacks, sickle cell and circulatory disorders. Even if nitrites were harmful, cured meats are not a significant source, as the USDA only allows 120 parts per million in hot dogs and bacon. Also, during the curing process, most of the nitrite forms nitric oxide, which binds to iron and gives hot dogs and bacon their characteristic pink color. Afterwards, the amount of nitrite left is only about 10 parts per million.

And if you think you can avoid nitrates and nitrites by eating so-called “nitrite- and nitrate-free” hot dogs and bacon, don’t be fooled. These products use “natural” sources of the same chemical like celery and beet juice and sea salt, and are no more free from nitrates and nitrites than standard cured meats. In fact, they may even contain more nitrates and nitrites when cured using “natural” preservatives.

It’s important to understand that neither nitrate nor nitrite accumulate in body. Ingested nitrate from food is converted into nitrite when it contacts our saliva, and of the nitrate we eat, 25% is converted into salivary nitrite, 20% converted into nitrite, and the rest is excreted in the urine within 5 hours of ingestion. (3) Any nitrate that is absorbed has a very short half-life, disappearing from our blood in under five minutes. (4) Some nitrite in our stomach reacts with gastric contents, forming nitric oxide which may have many beneficial effects. (56) You can listen to my podcast “Does Red Meat Increase Your Risk of Death?“ for more information on this topic.

In general, the bulk of the science suggests that nitrates and nitrites are not problematic and may even be beneficial to health. Critical reviews of the original evidence suggesting that nitrates/nitrites are carcinogenic reveals that in the absence of co-administration of a carcinogenic nitrosamine precursor, there is no evidence for carcinogenesis. (7) Newly published prospective studies show no association between estimated intake of nitrite and nitrite in the diet and stomach cancer. (8) Nitric oxide, formed by nitrite, has been shown to have vasodilator properties and may modulate platelet function in the human body, improving blood pressure and reducing heart attack risk. (91011) Nitrates may also help boost the immune system and protect against pathogenic bacteria (121314)

So what do we take from this? There’s no reason to fear nitrates and nitrites in food. No reason to buy nitrate-free, uncured bacon. No reason to avoid cured meats in general, particularly those from high quality sources. In fact, because of concerns about trichinosis from pork, it makes a lot more sense in my opinion to buy cured bacon and other pork products. I do.

Have I changed your mind about the safety of eating bacon? Let me know your thoughts on nitrates and nitrites in the comments below.

Mold can develop rapidly in damp environments after flooding from hurricanes, and it’s dangerous for those with breathing problems brought on by asthma or allergies.

14. Workplace Smoking Bans Are Effective

A new study finds that workplace smoking bans and smoke-free laws are effective in saving lives that could be lost due to sudden cardiac death and heart attack. Secondhand smoke kills 42,000 non-smokers in the US each year, including nearly 900 infants.

15. Florida Compounding Pharmacy Stops Production

As Massachusetts deals with the shut of a third compounding pharmacies, violations in a Florida pharmacy that could lead to drug contamination and were never corrected based on reports from previous inspections forced regulators to halt drug production.

16. The Blair Witch Diet: Scare the Pounds Off

A study has found that the adrenaline rush from watching a heart-pounding horror movie can boost your calorie burn by 1/3 — enough extra calories to equal a 30-minute walk or offset a Hershey bar. The calorie-burn champ: “The Shining,” at 184.

17. Flavonoids May Protect Against Stomach Cancer

Eating more plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables may protect against stomach cancers. A European study found that women with the highest intake of flavonoids were at least half as likely to develop stomach cancer as those with the least intake.

18. Third Massachusetts Pharmacy Shut Down

Another pharmacy in Massachusetts is shut down after concerns about sterile conditions where drugs are observed by health inspectors investigating conditions at other pharmacies throughout the state.

19. Avoid Colds with CDC’s Hand Washing Tips

To avoid colds and flu the CDC recommends thorough hand washing, rubbing all surfaces vigorously for a good 20 seconds using soap, taking care to clean between fingers and around fingernails, and following up with a 60% alcohol hand sanitizer.

20. Healthy Kids Die from Flu the Fastest

Why even “healthy” kids need flu shots: A new CDC study finds that almost half the U.S. children who die from flu each year are in excellent health when it strikes them, and that the robust victims actually tend to die faster than the less healthy.

21. More Problems Found at Massachusetts Pharmacy

As the FDA continues its investigation of the New England Compounding Center, they have found more poor practices and reports from employees documenting bacterial and fungal contamination in rooms that should have been sterile.

Can Some Trans Fats Be Healthy?

Trans fats are one of the few food components that are widely accepted as being unhealthy, and for good reason. Industrial trans fats are created by pumping hydrogen molecules into liquid vegetable oil, changing the chemical structure and causing the oil to become a solid fat. Trans fats are generally considered to be especially harmful because they raise total cholesterol while lowering HDL cholesterol. However, as usual with conventional nutrition advice, there is far more danger to trans fats than simply the effect they have on cholesterol ratios. Mark Sisson has written a helpful explanation as to why trans fats are best to be avoided.

However, it may surprise you to learn that many of the foods recommended on a Paleo or whole foods diet contain trans fats as well. Dairy fat and meats from grass eating “ruminant” animals contain significant amounts of trans fatty acids, and grass-fed animals actually have higher levels of these trans fats than grain fed animals. (1) In fact, your grass-fed steak contains about 0.5g-1.4g of trans fat per ounce (28.3g) of total fat. (2)

Does this mean we should avoid all grass-fed animal products, cut out red meat, and only eat fat-free dairy if we want to reduce our risk of heart disease? Not at all! These naturally occurring trans fats in ruminant animal products are not at all harmful to our health, and may actually reduce the development of many different chronic diseases.

Are you eating enough healthy trans fat? Tweet This

CLA: How is it different than industrial trans fats?

Naturally occurring trans fats are formed when rumen bacteria in the stomachs of ruminant animals (cows, sheep, etc.) digest the grass the animal has eaten and form trans-rumenic and trans-vaccenic acid via biohydrogenation of polyunsaturated fats in the grass. Conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, is a trans-rumenic acid that is found abundantly in grass-fed meat and dairy products, and to a lesser degree in grain-fed products. It is also produced in our bodies from the conversion of trans-vaccenic acid (VA) from those same animal products.

Industrial trans fats have slightly different chemical structures than those trans fats found in beef and butter (specifically, the location of the double bond). CLA also has contains both cis- and trans- bonds, whereas most industrial trans fats have only trans bonds. But these minor differences in structure lead to majorly different effects in the body, as has been shown in many clinical and epidemiological studies. (3) While industrial trans fats are shown to increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and obesity, CLA and other trans fats found naturally in animal products are actually thought to decrease the risk of those diseases.

Health benefits of CLA

The major difference between CLA and industrial trans fats is the effect they have on heart disease and atherosclerosis. Several clinical and epidemiological studies have been performed, and meta-analysis of these studies suggests that natural trans fats from animal products are not associated with any increased risk of heart disease. (4) These studies have generally have shown either an inverse or no association between natural trans fat intake and heart disease across multiple geographical locations. (5)

While there have been very few highly controlled clinical trials studying the effects of CLA and VA on heart disease and atherosclerosis, the few that exist also support the conclusion that these natural trans fats may actually reduce the risk of heart disease. In animal studies, CLA has demonstrated potent anti-atherogenic effects, preventing fatty streak and plaque formation in the arteries of rodents by changing macrophage lipid metabolism. (67) While more research in humans is needed, it seems that grass-fed dairy and meat products, high in both CLA and vitamin K2, are some of the best foods you can eat if you’re looking to prevent a heart attack.

CLA may also be helpful in preventing the development and improving the management of type II diabetes. In rats, CLA has been shown to improve glucose tolerance and skeletal muscle insulin action. (8) Research has also demonstrated that CLA may reduce hyperinsulinemia by increasing the production of adiponectin, a hormone that can lead to enhanced insulin action and improve insulin sensitivity. (9) Epidemiological evidence suggests that there is an inverse association between CLA levels in adipose tissue and diabetes risk, further supporting the hypothesis that CLA may be involved in healthy insulin regulation. (10)

CLA has even been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, in both experimental and case control studies. (11) It appears to work primarily by blocking the growth and metastatic spread of tumors, controlling the cell cycle, and by reducing inflammation. (12) CLA is able to interrupt the omega-6 PUFA metabolic pathway for the synthesis of eicosanoids, preventing the inflammatory processes that promote cancer development. This may be one reason why dairy consumption has been shown to be inversely associated with certain cancers like breast and colorectal cancer. (1314151617) Based on these animal and human studies, it’s possible that CLA plays a role in cancer prevention.

You may have seen CLA supplements advertised as a weight loss promoter. Some research suggests that CLA can help reduce body fat and promote weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. (18) In a few studies, dietary supplementation of CLA has been shown to increase lean body mass, reduce body fat mass, and improve overall body composition in overweight individuals. (192021) It is thought that CLA may promote improvements in body composition by increasing the breakdown and reducing the storage of body fat. That said, this reduction in body fat is small, so CLA may not cause significant weight loss in the way that supplement advertisers would suggest. But it certainly wouldn’t hurt in your weight loss efforts to increase your dietary CLA.

These studies certainly provide interesting food for thought about CLA’s possible health benefits. That said, I think we need more high quality human research before we can be certain about CLA’s role in human health and disease. The good news is that all of the foods CLA is present in are beneficial in other ways, so you’ll get enough CLA simply by emphasizing grass-fed meat and dairy products (assuming you tolerate dairy).

Dietary Sources of CLA

So now that you know some of the incredible benefits of natural trans fats like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and vaccenic acid (VA), how can you increase them in your diet?

As I mentioned earlier, grass-fed dairy and meat are the best sources of CLA and VA. In fact, 100% grass-fed animal products contain from three to five times more CLA than products from animals fed grain. (22) And since CLA is in the fat, the best sources will be fattier cuts of meat, bone marrow, high-fat dairy products like butter and whole milk, and full fat cheeses. Eatwild.com has some great information about CLA in food products, and even has a product directory that allows you to search locally for food made from animals raised on fresh pasture.

Some people may believe that supplementing CLA has the same potential benefits as eating a diet rich in CLA. I disagree, and believe that these supplements could be potentially harmful. Most CLA supplements are derived from linoleic acid in safflower oil, and some studies have shown that CLA supplementation in humans can cause fatty liver, inflammation, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Furthermore, CLA supplements have not demonstrated the beneficial effects seen from dietary intake of CLA in human trials. This may be due to the composition of synthetic CLA supplements; 50% of the product is an unnamed isomer, and is an entirely different fatty acid than the CLA and VA found in meat and dairy products. (23)

It’s always better to get nutrients from food rather than supplements whenever possible, and CLA is no exception. So if you’re looking for a heart-healthy, cancer-preventing diet, be sure to include plenty of grass-fed beef, butter, and cheese. (And don’t worry if your doctor thinks you’re crazy!)

How To Lose Weight – Simple But Effective Tips!

If you are overweight and wish to shed some pounds, you need to understand a basic fact. If weight can be gained, it can be lost too. In other words, if you have managed to put on weight, you can also manage to lose it. It is just a matter of knowing how to accomplish that feat.

Weight gain is actually a process. People do not gain weight automatically. They do so unknowingly, by following a certain pattern of habits that makes them put on weight. If they can learn to reverse that process, they would start to lose weight instead of gaining weight.

You need to approach weight loss using a multi-pronged approach. Mind control, diet and exercise – these are the three essential components for successful weight loss. All three components are extremely important in helping you achieve your goal of losing weight.

All of us know about New Year resolutions. They are seasonal just like New Year’s Day, and equally short-lived. By mid-January, some people cannot remember what resolution they made just two weeks prior. This tendency to give up on one’s resolution is basically due to a lack of mind control.

People who are overweight quite often make a resolution to start dieting. Or they promise themselves that they will exercise regularly until they lose weight. But very soon, they are back to their old lifestyle, and unable to stop themselves from gaining weight.

Any weight loss program that focuses solely on diet and exercise without taking mind control into consideration will most often fail. Of course, dieting will definitely make you lose weight. Likewise, exercise will also help you shed those extra pounds. But most people who start a dieting or exercise regimen give up within a few weeks due to a lack of mind control. Mind control is therefore an important component in weight loss.

Think of weight loss as a chariot pulled by two horses. One of the horses is dieting and the other is exercise, and the man driving the chariot is mind control. The horses are necessary for moving the chariot to its final destination. But the man holding the reins is the one who drives the horses towards that destination.

Likewise, diet and exercise are vital for weight loss, but mind control and discipline are extremely important in keeping the exercise and diet regimen going. Learn how to control your mind effectively. Then you will be able to keep up your diet and exercise program until you shed those pounds and get into the shape you have always longed for.

Ontario Medical Association Effectively Calls Out Heart and Stroke Foundation BS

While I'll be blogging more about the significance of the OMA's call to action early next week, today's blog's a quickie.

Have a gander at the photo up above.

That's the warning label that the OMA wants to place on grape juice (and presumably other juices as well). They want a warning because there's risk to the regular consumption of grape juice - a beverage I've labeled the world's least healthy beverage - in that it contains roughly double the calories and sugar of Coca-Cola. 10 ridiculous teaspoons of sugar per glass.

Now contrast the proposed label from the OMA up above to the actual label from the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Health Check program on grape juice down below. What's that Health Check logo for again? Here's the Heart and Stroke Foundation's explanation,
"The Health Check logo tells you the food or menu item has been reviewed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s registered dietitians and can contribute to an overall healthy diet."

As far as I'm concerned, the only options that would explain the Heart and Stroke Foundation's endorsement of juice as something that contributes to an overall healthy diet are, ignorance, pigheaded stubbornness, or greed.

And given the American Academy of Pediatrics and Canadian Pediatric Society have both long ago come out to recommend a half cup juice maximum for younger children and 1 cup maximum for everyone else, I'd say ignorance is the least likely option.
